‘Once every Preston Guild’ is the saying. It’s one of those phrases that means absolutely nothing if you’re not from the area. But to those from Preston, Preston Guild is a once every 20 years event of real significance. And that’s why I’m particularly proud to be working with Preston Council to capture its spirit.

Once, the UK had many guilds. Formed by local merchants and traders, belonging to a guild meant you had the authority to trade in a particular town. Guild festivals were a way of celebrating trades, produce and craftsmanship. Today, there’s only one left. And it’s been a feature of life in Preston since 1179.

Yet it’s important that the images I take shouldn’t crumble under the weight of that history. Preston isn’t locked in the past. It’s ever-changing and busy and energetic. It has a rich diversity in everything from its people and economy to its landscape.

My Preston Guild photography is about the people who live and work here – the humour, the character, the effort and endeavour that’s woven into the fabric of the city. Guild is about community and culture. It’s about innovation, creativity and sustainability – all things driven by people.

So while Preston’s landmark buildings and swathes of greenery will no doubt feature in my photography, they’ll be the backdrop to the lives happening in and around them. That’s the true spirit of Preston Guild 2012.

Claire Norcross is an award-winning designer specialising in lighting, and offers a design and consultancy service for both the commercial and bespoke markets.

Claire is best known for the range of designs produced whilst head of lighting at Habitat. These include Spindle, Newton and Ribbon; which received the ‘Best in Lighting’ award from Elle Decoration magazine in 2006.

The ‘Aperture’ Light will feature on the new Luminosity Site and shown below are some examples of work in action and some of the shots that will be used once the new site is up and running.
